Victoria Junction Enhancement Project

Victoria Park Junction Enhancement Committee

Background:

Victoria Park has always been a special place in the heart of our community and is known as one of the oldest parks in the country.  In the past, the green space at the junction of the Plum Creek and Souris River has been a meeting place with an historical emphasis on providing recreational and cultural opportunities for the community to gather.

It was realized that with further development, this area of the park, at the junction, could continue to act as a special meeting place enjoyed by both residents and visitors. A committee came together to plan, design, and fundraise a project to enhance the area at the junction of the Souris River and Plum Creek.

Our vision is to enhance this area as a year-round gathering place outdoors near the river where there is space for community/family events; and opportunities for recreational and cultural activities; a “mini-Forks.”

Our Values and Guiding Principles for this Project include:

  • The project must be feasible with a minimal impact on operating budgets,
  • Thorough community consultation,
  • Fully accessible to maximize community access and opportunity for all ages,
  • Area able to rebound from a flood situation,
  • Respectful of nearby property owners and the natural surroundings,

Where we are at:

The committee has been meeting regularly since June and now has a design proposal to bring to the community. Our design concept includes: extensive shoreline restoration and stabilization; significant flooding mitigation thru raising the ground level; a wheelchair accessible pathway along the river and creek sides; a park entrance wall featuring historical and cultural information along with donor recognition; on the other side of the wall a small stage for cultural and artistic events; a tiered area for fishing at the junction of the creek and river; a patio area for a pop-up food and drink vendor, a new dock with a kayak launch, and several gathering and eating patios.  This will all be complemented by appropriate lighting and the planting of several new trees, shrubs and perennials.   Other components will be dependent on successful fundraising.
